New Web site puts a fresh face on social video. Jottle.com

The anonymity of social video chat made the revolutionary site Chatroulette popular with, at one time, millions of video chatters. Unfortunately with that appeal comes some risk, as online chatters can see whatever is in view of the Web cam. Increasingly that means being exposed to a bit more than you might be comfortable with. Jottle is a breakthrough face-to-face video chat site that maintains the user’s anonymity without being exposed to the junk.

The typical social video chat site allows users to see whatever the other chatter’s Web cam picks up—that includes the good, bad and ugly. Jottle.com utilizes special software so that chatters can only see the other person’s face, masking off the rest of the video. No face, no video. After 30 seconds, or earlier at the user’s option, the mask can be lifted to show the full image. With Jottle’s masking technology, people looking to show their ‘junk’ won’t even bother to try, raising the quality of the experience for everyone.

“While it’s interesting to be able to look into the world of someone you just met, it does leave the potential to be exposed to more than you bargained for, if you know what I mean,” said Chris Merrill, of Jottle.com. “With Jottle, you can keep things literally at face value until you’re comfortable. That gives video chatters a certain comfort level and makes the experience even more enjoyable.”

Jottle works in any browser on PCs and Macs. All you need is a Web cam attached to your computer and Adobe Flash Player installed. Upon entering the site, the Jottle software first recognizes your camera and then searches for your face. Once the oval on the screen locks in on your face, you can then enter the site and chat with others.

“Other video chat sites have tried to correct the ‘exposure’ problem with visitors showing a little too much by linking to Facebook, which forces users to create profiles. That takes away the anonymity element, which is frankly a lot of the appeal,” said Merrill. “With Jottle, you can stay completely anonymous while you surf and chat without having to see anything you don’t want to.”

As part of its beta launch, Jottle.com is giving a $ 100 Amazon gift certificate to the best beta participant who leaves the best feedback on their Jottle experience.
